As-salāmu ʿalaykum. Is zuhd about looking poor, ragged, and out of touch with life?

Answer

Waʿalaykum as-salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

May Allāh bless us all. Āmīn.

Zuhd is not as described in the question.

When we look at the sīrah of the Prophet ﷺ, the sunnah, and the lives of the ṣaḥābah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum), we understand zuhd to mean the following:

  1. Making use of your life and wealth in a way that brings you closer to Allāh and benefits your Hereafter.
  2. Leaving aside anything that distances you from Allāh—even if it is permissible in Islām—in order to build your Jannah.

Thus, zuhd is not about outward appearance or abandoning the world altogether, but about where your heart is attached and how you use the blessings given to you.
