In the quiet moments of reflection, one often realises that life’s most profound lessons are rarely found in books or lectures alone; they are discovered through experience, observation, and the wisdom of those who have walked the path before us. Over the years, I have witnessed how simple words, small gestures, and choices of character can shape destinies, mend hearts, and leave a lasting impact on those around us.
The following points are a culmination of personal experience and the guidance shared by scholars, mentors, and noble souls throughout history. They are gentle reminders for anyone seeking to refine their behaviour, strengthen their relationships, and live with sincerity, integrity, and purpose. By reflecting on them and striving to embody them, one not only earns the respect of people but also draws nearer to Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى), who knows what lies in the heart.
10 Principles of Character and Conduct
1. Guard your tongue carefully. Speak less than you think, and cultivate a soft, measured voice. The manner in which you speak often leaves a deeper impression than the words themselves.
2. Make promises with caution, and once made, honour them faithfully and without compromise. Integrity in one’s word is a reflection of inner character and taqwā.
3. Do not miss a chance to encourage others. Speak kindly, offer praise for good work, and uplift those around you. If correction is necessary, deliver it with wisdom, not malice.
4. Take a genuine interest in others; their work, families, and joys. Celebrate with those who rejoice, console those who grieve, and let every person you meet feel valued and respected. Even the humblest soul is deserving of dignity.
5. Be cheerful and gracious. Do not burden others with trivial complaints or minor disappointments. Remember, each person carries their own unseen burdens, and your lightness of heart can ease theirs.
6. Maintain an open mind. Discuss matters with clarity, but avoid argument for its own sake. True intelligence is shown in disagreement without discord, in firmness without harshness.
7. Let your virtues speak. Do not dwell on the faults of others. Discourage gossip and slander, for it consumes precious time and wounds communities in ways that are often irreparable.
8. Respect the feelings of others. Wit or humour at someone’s expense may seem harmless, but can leave lasting hurt. Gentle speech is a sign of wisdom and maturity.
9. Pay no heed to unconstructive, ill-natured remarks about you. Often, the messenger is inaccurate, and even well-meant words can be misunderstood. Live in such a way that your character itself silences false reports. Many conflicts arise from nothing more than impatience or disordered habits.
10. Do not seek recognition impatiently. Strive to do good, be patient, and let the outcome speak for itself. True success is sweeter when quietly earned, and the rewards of sincerity are far greater than public acclaim.
