Inquiry Regarding the Permissibility of Day Trading and Scalping in Islamic Finance Dear Sheikh Sajib Umar I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to seek your esteemed guidance on a matter related to day trading and its compliance with Islamic finance principles. I have been engaged in trading for several years, primarily focusing on technical analysis and short-term strategies such as scalping, often within very short time frames (like one-minute or five-minute charts). My trading is conducted through proprietary firms using demo accounts, so no personal capital is at risk. My specific questions are: Is such short-term trading, often referred to as scalping, considered permissible in Islamic finance? Does the use of demo accounts in proprietary trading affect the permissibility of the practice? I would greatly appreciate your insights on these questions to ensure that my trading activities are fully compliant with Sharia principles. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to your guidance. Warm regards, Walid Sultani

Assalaamu a'laikum Sheikh, In sh'aAllaah you're well. I am a single mother to one daughter (divorced from her father around 15yrs ago). We're in Australia and we have no relatives near or extended anyone here. I only have an old father back home who is retired now and no brothers. My daughter's father or his side has never been in contact, so basically my daughter has no one. I earn an average income and plan to buy a small house for us to live in and also leaving a roof for my daughter if Im not alive tomorrrow so she doesnt have to struggle. There are limited islamic finance options here and they offer higher rate. My question is: - Given my circumstances, can i take a home finance from a commercial bank (i only intend to buy one apartment for our residence). The islamic finance houses require larger deposit and have higher profit/interest rate and stricter eligibility requirements. - Can i take a life insurance policy with minimum amount just so my daughter has some money to cover for her studies and living exepnses till she starts earning on her own, if im not alive tomorrow? INtention is not to become rich or accumlate welath but to cover basic needs for my daughter. Jazak Allaahu Khair!

Assalamu alaikum Sheikh Sajid. I'm an 18 year old brother that is set to start University Insha Allah. I won't be applying for a student loan for tuition fees. However in order to receive grants and bursaries from the university, which do not need to be repaid back and have no interest, I need to be means checked e.g the University needs to see my household income to see if I am eligible for grants and bursaries. To be means checked I need to apply for a maintenance loan with £0.00. I am not taking any loan from the government and am only applying for a maintenance loan in order to be mean checked. The maintenance loan application at £0 may mention interest payment in the contract, I'm not sure. Is it halal for me to apply for a maintenance loan with £0 in order to be means checked and qualified for bursaries and grants?

Assalamu alaykum, I am a software developer currently in the recruitment process. The company generally has projects that are halal, but they are offering me a project with an insurance company, working on insurance management software from client to user. This project has been running for five years and will likely continue for a longer period. Are all projects with insurance companies considered haram, or are some permissible? Assalamu ʿalaykum Shaykh. I’m considering paying a Muslim influencer who became famous through MMA to promote a halal product on Instagram. The video would be on his account, and he would speak positively about the brand. Is it permissible to partner with him for this, knowing his fame came from MMA? And if I sponsor a YouTube video with an influencer and I’m only responsible for a 90-second segment where the influencer promotes a brand in a halal way, am I sinful if the rest of the video contains music or haram content? Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Trade Boycotts in Islamic Fiqh
July 22, 2025
Answer Summary :
In Islam, trade is considered a means (waseelah) towards an end (maqsad), and its ruling depends on the nature of the outcome it leads to. If the outcome is lawful, the means remain lawful; if the outcome is prohibited, the means become prohibited. Ibn al-Qayyim explained four types of mubaah (permissible) actions based on their outcomes, ranging from those that lead to harm and thus become forbidden to those whose benefits outweigh potential harms and remain permissible or even recommended. Applying this framework to the topic of boycotting, if a trade or financial boycott helps to reduce oppression or pressure unjust systems, it can be recommended or even compulsory. While some business harm may occur, this is a natural aspect of market dynamics, and such actions may serve a higher moral and social purpose in Islam.

Since Dhul Qa’dah was only 29 days this year (1446 AH), my flight back from Hajj is scheduled to depart early after sunrise on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah. This means I will need to leave for the airport before Fajr prayer and won’t be able to complete the pelting (Ramy al-Jamarat) for the 12th day. What should I do in this situation? Also, what about the farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Widaa)? I was told it must be the very last act of Hajj, but I won’t have done the final pelting yet.
